Azor Ahai, le Prince qui a été Promis et l'Épée Rouge des Héros [3/6]

→→ La précédente partie (article) était surtout consacrée aux candidats potentiels pour le titre de Prince qui a été Promis et Azor Ahai. Cette partie là explorera le mythe d'Illumination, l'Epée Rouge des Héros.

___ ౖ Le forgeage d'Illumination

__ D'après la légende, Illumination était une épée flamboyante portée par Azor Ahai, également connu sous les noms de Hyrkoon le Héro, Yin Tar, Neferion, et Eldric Shadowchaser ; un héro légendaire qui a combattu les forces obscures qui menaçaient le monde il y a de cela des milliers d'années. La légende d'Illumination raconte comment Azor a forgé l'épée dans le temple sacré. Cette histoire est racontée dans le Compendium de Jade, un recueil de conte et légendes orientaux dans les livres :

 

__ → “It was a time when darkness lay heavy on the world. To oppose it, the hero must have a hero's blade, oh, like none that had ever been seen. And so for thirty days and thirty nights Azor Ahai labored sleepless in the temple, forging a blade in the sacred fires. [...] Yet when he plunged it into water to temper the steel it burst asunder. [...]
__ The second time it took him fifty days and fifty nights, and this sword seemed even finer than the first. Azor Ahai captured a lion, to temper the blade by plunging it through the beast's heart, but once more the steel shattered and split. Great was his woe and great was his sorrow then, for he knew what he must do.”
__ A hundred days and a hundred nights he labored on the third blade and as it glowed white hot in the sacred fires, he summoned his wife. 'Nissa Nissa,' he said to her, for that was her name, 'bare your breast, and know that I love you best of all that is in this world. She did this thing, why I cannot say, and Azor Ahai thrust the smoking sword through her living heart. It is said that her cry of anguish and ecstasy left a crack across the face of the moon, but her blood and her soul and her strength and her courage all went into the steel. Such is the tale of the forging of Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes.” A Clash of Kings, Davos I

__ D'après cette légende très macabre, Illumination était une épée flamboyante, forgée dans un feu sacré, et tempéré par le sang du cœur d'une femme, et enrichie par la vie et l'âme de cette dernière. On a déjà vu comment Melisandre essaye de manipuler les événements pour que la prophétie corresponde à Stannis Baratheon. Ainsi, elle allume un feu sacré dédié à R'hllor, où les idoles en bois des Sept sont brûlées, avec une épée plantée dans celle de la Mère :

__ → "The Mother seemed almost to shudder as the flames came licking up her face. A longsword had been thrust through her heart, and its leather grip was alive with flame. [...] The king plunged into the fire with his teeth clenched, holding the leather cloak before him to keep off the flames. He went straight to the Mother, grasped the sword with his gloved hand, and wrenched it free of the burning wood with a single hard jerk. Then he was retreating, the sword held high, jade-green flames swirling around cherry-red steel. A Clash of Kings, Davos I

__ Pourtant, l'épée que Stannis tire de la statue de la Mère est fausse, même si elle a l'air de briller comme par magie de la même façon que le soleil.

__ → “Lightbringer was his sword. Tempered with his wife's blood if Votar can be believed. Thereafter Lightbringer was never cold to the touch, but warm as Nissa Nissa had been warm. In battle the blade burned fiery hot. Once Azor Ahai fought a monster. When he thrust the sword through the belly of the beast, its blood began to boil. Smoke and steam poured from its mouth, its eyes melted and dribbled down its cheeks, and its body burst into flame.” Clydas blinked. “A sword that makes its own heat ...” A Dance with Dragons, Jon III

__ L'épée de Stannis brille autant que si c'était le soleil sous forme d'acier, mais d'après la légende Illumination était chaude. L'épée avait une chaleur qui pouvait devenir aussi forte que celle du feu.

___ ౖ Le feu fait chair

__ Si Daenerys Targaryen est bel et bien la réincarnation d'Azor Ahai, alors où est son épée flamboyante ? Les prophéties peuvent être lues de manière littérale ou symboliques, parfois des deux façons à la fois. L'épée rouge de Daenerys n'est donc pas forcément une vraie épée. Dans les livres les dragons de Daenerys sont d'ailleurs comparés à des armes... et plus spécifiquement, à une épée :

__ → “When your dragons were small, they were a wonder. Grown, they are death and devastation, a flaming sword above the world.” A Dance with Dragons, Daenerys III

__ → “Melisandre swears that she has seen me in her flames, facing the dark with Lightbringer raised on high. Lightbringer!” Stannis gave a derisive snort. ”It glimmers prettily, I'll grant you, but on the Blackwater this magic sword served me no better than any common steel. A dragon would have turned that battle. Aegon once stood here as I do, looking down on this table. Do you think we would name him Aegon the Conqueror today if he had not had dragons ?“ A Storm of Swords, Davos V

__ La dernière citation lie Illumination et les dragons, et les dragons sont même décrits comme des épées flamboyantes puisqu'ils sont du feu vivant. Cependant, Daenerys a mis au monde trois dragons, quand la légende ne parle que d'une seule épée.

__ Azor Ahai a tenté de forger Illumination par trois fois, la lame n'ayant pas supporté le tempérage les deux premières fois. Daenerys a donné naissance à trois dragons sur le bûcher funéraire de son mari. Dans la partie précédente on parlait du fait que Daenerys avait contracté un mariage avec le feu lui même pour pouvoir devenir la Mère des Dragons. Ainsi, Viserion, Rhaegal et Drogon sont des armes forgées dans un feu sacré... mais ce feu qui les a mis au monde ne représente que le forgeage, et donc le tempérage reste à faire.

__ Si les trois dragons correspondent aux trois lames forgées par Azor Ahai, quel dragon correspond à quelle lame ? L'ordre dans lequel les œufs ont éclos peut fournir un indice :

__ → She heard a crack, the sound of shattering stone. The platform of wood and brush and grass began to shift and collapse in upon itself. Bits of burning wood slid down at her, and Dany was showered with ash and cinders. And something else came crashing down, bouncing and rolling, to land at her feet ; a chunk of curved rock, pale and veined with gold, broken and smoking. The roaring filled the world, yet dimly through the firefall Dany heard women shriek and children cry out in wonder. A Game of Thrones, Daenerys X

__ Viserion est le premier à naître.

__ → And there came a second crack, loud and sharp as thunder, and the smoke stirred and whirled around her and the pyre shifted, the logs exploding as the fire touched their secret hearts. [...] The third crack was as loud and sharp as the breaking of the world. A Game of Thrones, Daenerys X

__ Le texte ne dit pas clairement qui de Rhaegal ou Drogon éclos en deuxième et/ou troisième. Mais l'emplacement des œufs sur le bûcher peut nous aider à le découvrir :

__ → She climbed the pyre herself to place the eggs around her sun-and-stars. The black beside his heart, under his arm. The green beside his head, his braid coiled around it. The cream-and-gold down between his legs. A Game of Thrones, Daenerys X

→→ Si on compare le placement des œufs avec la légende d'Illumination, on peut supposer que Drogon était le dernier œuf à éclore. L'œuf noir placé près du cœur de Khal Drogo éclot avec un craquement “as loud and sharp as the breaking of the world.” Le phrasé rappelle le sacrifice de Nissa Nissa. Quand Illumination lui transperça le cœur, Nissa Nissa laissa échapper un “cry of anguish and ecstasy left a crack across the face of the moon.” Un craquement qui fait penser à l'effondrement du monde, et un cri qui fendit la lune.
